About Us
"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- W. B. Yeats
I have always had a passion for education. Nothing outside my family has given me more joy than my academic experiences and adventures. Education opens doors nothing else can. A person with knowledge and a willingness to work and continue to learn will always find success.
They say that luck is where preparation meets opportunity. I was very fortunate to attend Southern Methodist University (we can't all be Bears!) on full scholarship and to study my favorite subjects: math, physics, computer science, and art history.
After graduating summa cum laude, I worked as the Honors Program Coordinator at SMU before heading to University of Arizona to complete my Ph.D. Throughout my academic career, I continually worked as a tutor, lab assistant and teaching assistant, helping students in math and physics, as well as with SAT and ACT preparation. I also taught mathematics at the community college. I eventually took a job as a systems engineer, but it didn't take long before I realized I had to return full-time to my passions: education and teaching.
I feel like my life has always been "lucky," and I have always wanted help others prepare for their own success. This is why I started Distinctive Tutors. I wanted to take the grunt work and guesswork out of finding tutors that I know parents experience when trying to find qualified tutoring for their children.
As a parent, I also know that there is nothing more important than the safety of our children. That is why all our tutors undergo thorough background checks. I won't send someone to your home if I don't know who they are.
I am also committed to the Greater Waco community. I participated in the first of five annual Educate Waco Summits, hosted by our mayor, Virginia DuPuy, in November 2008. When you work with Distinctive Tutors, you're not working with a faceless franchise with no connection to the community. You are working with me, and I will stand by this service.
I thank you for considering Distinctive Tutors for your academic support needs. We are proud to serve McLennan County. Please do not hesitate to call or email us. I look forward to working with you.
Sincerely,
April K. Andreas, Ph.D.
